How to Fill in Sinking Driveways With Concrete Underneath

Over time, asphalt and concrete driveways can develop sinking patches that lead to pot holes or cracks. Driveways sink when the foundation underneath wears away with water or because it wasn't compacted properly during installation. To stop the damage from spreading and provide the pavement with proper support, fill the expanse beneath the surface with concrete. This do-it-yourself project, also known as mudjacking, offers a permanent solution and only takes a weekend to complete.

  • Core drill
  • 2-inch bit
  • Hose
  • Mudjacking pump

Instructions

    • 1

Mark drill holes on the sunken pavement with chalk. The holes should begin at the point of the sunken pavement closest to the house and move down the length of the driveway. If the area is wide, mark holes across the center of the pavement as well, spaced about 6 inches apart.

    • 2

Drill holes through the pavement with a core drill and a 2-inch bit.

    • 3

Insert a hose into the first hole and stop when you feel resistance. Jamming it into dirt or gravel will only clog the hose.

    • 4

Attach the other side of the hose to a mudjacking pump. Screw the hose on tight and clamp the end to prevent it from popping off.

    • 5

Stir concrete mix in a wheelbarrow with enough water to form a batter-like texture. Scoop it into the mudjacking pump with a shovel. The mudjacking pump is a hydraulic pump designed to pump small amounts of cementitious concrete beneath slabs.

    • 6

Turn the machine on and slowly pump concrete through the hose beneath the sunken slab. Continue pumping until the immediate area rises to its original level.

    • 7

Remove the hose from the first hole and insert it in the next one. Repeat Step 6 until concrete is pumped into all of the holes and the entire area is level with the rest of the driveway.

    • 8

Fill the holes with the concrete mix and a putty knife, and smooth the top with a trowel.
