How to Roll an Asphalt Mat After the Paver

Asphalt is a common paving for roadways, parking lots and driveways. The finished asphalt surface is known as the asphalt mat. Department of Transportation regulations state that all roadways must be compacted to about 96 percent. The paver itself will compact the asphalt to between 75 percent and 85 percent. Double-drum roller machines are used to compact and smooth the asphalt the remaining 10 percent to 20 percent. The same regulations serve as guidelines for paving private drives and parking lots.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the paver to lay the asphalt. Line up the 5-ton double drum roller behind the paver. Place a a smaller machine, a 1-to 2-ton double drum roller, directly behind the 5-ton roller. Make sure all machines are in place before paving begins, because you must begin to roll the asphalt mat as soon as the asphalt is excreted from the paver.

    • 2

Follow eight feet to 10 feet behind the paver with a 5-ton double drum roller, compacting the asphalt with the flat rollers. Stay close behind the paver, because the compacting of the asphalt must be done with the mat at a temperature greater than 175 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Follow the 5-ton double-drum roller with the smaller machine. This machine will remove any indentations left by the paving process and ensure a clean, smooth surface. This machine should follow no more than 15 to 20 feet behind the paver.

Remove all machinery from the surface of the asphalt and allow to cool and cure for eight to 12 hours before use. Apply asphalt sealer if desired.
