Asphalt layers are usually laid about 3 to 5 inches thick and require about 20 minutes to set into place. It is important to spread the asphalt over the desired surface immediately after pouring. Since asphalt has no drainage, make sure there are drainage areas around an asphalt driveway or close to an asphalt road.
According to Connecticut-based M&S Paving and Sealing, asphalt must arrive at the job site at the right temperature for effective paving. The asphalt must be in a viscous form, around 300 F, so it is able to be poured over the surface. If the mix is too hot, you will see blue smoke coming off of the surface, which will lead to premature hardening and surface raveling. If the mix is too cool, it will not compact and spread properly over the paving surface.
Driveway or private road asphalt installation is usually a job reserved for professionals only. It is important to understand the grade of asphalt you are purchasing, as some contractors may use low grade materials and charge a high installation price. Asphalt should be applied when the weather is warm and dry, ideally over 70 F.
Once an asphalt paving job is complete it must be maintained to achieve optimal life. A fog seal or black seal should be applied to the surface every five to 10 years, after all cracks and potholes are patched. Cracks and holes should be tended to immediately with a rubber or asphalt patching product to prevent moisture for seeping below the surface.
