Driveway Pavement Options

The right pavement for a home adds beauty and durability to the driveway. Dirt driveways may wash out in the rain. Rock and gravel driveways require frequent reshaping, raking and additional gravel. These options sometimes pale in comparison to the convenience of a paved area for the family vehicles. When planning to install or renovate a driveway, keep in mind that the various options vary widely in cost.
  1. Asphalt

    • Asphalt, or blacktop, goes on in a smooth layer of black. The composition of the asphalt is good for areas with distinct heat or cold temperature ranges, as it can slightly expand and contract slightly without damage. Asphalt also absorbs sound, so the sounds of vehicles' engines do not echo as the vehicles pull into the drive. Asphalt does require regular sealing, and heavy rain, severe cold and too much weight or pressure may cause cracks. Cracks can be patched with new asphalt or filled with a tar sealant.

    Concrete

    • Concrete is a durable paving option, and since it can be a do-do-it-yourself project, it can be an affordable choice. Concrete driveways are often reinforced with rebar for added strength; the concrete can be painted to provide a variety of color options. Concrete driveways require yearly sealing to prevent weather damage. Seeping water may cause concrete to crack; these cracks can be repaired with a quick-drying concrete or epoxy filler.

    Brick

    • Brick driveways can give an old Colonial feel to a home while offering durability. Paving brick is thicker and heavier than bricks used for building homes and fireplaces. The brick can be laid in a traditional offset pattern or made into more elaborate designs. Some brick paving involves the laying of a thin layer of concrete prior to setting the bricks. Other methods involve fitting the bricks together without the addition of any adhesive products. Cost may be a factor in selecting brick, as it is not one of the most affordable options available.

    Unusual Options

    • For the homeowner who wants something different, there are several out-of-the-ordinary options. Cobblestones set in a concrete mix add an Old World appearance to a home while creating a durable paved driveway. Crushed granite mixed with concrete results in a casual look for a driveway. A paved driveway created from fitted smooth stones, with or without the use of concrete, can offer a rich, elegant look. These unusual options are typically more expensive than simple asphalt or concrete driveways.
