How to Calculate the Pavers Needed for a Circular Driveway

Circular driveways are a convenient way to provide access to a building, and an exit route, without the need to vehicles to reverse or turn around. Constructing them from paver blocks is both attractive and practical as the blocks are easy to lay, create a permeable surface and come in a range of styles and colors. Determining the number of blocks required is straightforward once you know the surface area of the driveway and the size of the blocks.

Calculate the total surface area of the driveway. A complete circle of pavers has a surface area expressed by the equation area = pi x r^2, where pi is the mathematical constant usually expressed as 3.1415 and r is the radius of the circle. For example, a circular driveway with a radius of 40 feet has a surface area of 5,026.4 square feet -- 3.1415 x 40 x 40 = 5,026.4.

Determine the surface area of a circular driveway with an unpaved circular space in the center by subtracting the central unpaved area from the total area. For example, a driveway with a radius of 40 feet and a central grass area with a radius of 30 feet has a surface area of 2,199.06 square feet -- 5,026.4 - 2,827.35 = 2,199.06.

Establish the surface area of a single paver. Pavers are available in several sizes, such as 4-by-8-inch. Determine the surface area by multiplying the width by the length. For example, a 4-by-8-inch paver has a surface area of 32 square inches -- 4 x 8 = 32. Find the number of pavers required to cover a square foot by dividing 144, square inches in a square foot, by the size of the paver. For example, 144 / 32 = 4.5, so 4.5 pavers measuring 4-by-8 inches will cover one square foot of driveway.

Multiply the square footage of the driveway by the number of pavers required per square foot. The result is the number of pavers required to cover the driveway. To conclude the example, a circular driveway covering 2,199.06 square feet requires 9,896 4-by-8-inch pavers -- 2,199.06 x 4.5 = 9,895.77
