How to Fix Ruts in Crushed Stone Driveways

Crushed stone driveways are viable alternatives to concrete or asphalt, lasting decades with maintenance and laid at a fraction of the price. Unlike concrete or asphalt, though, a crushed stone driveway can quickly develop ruts if heavy use is combined with heavy rainfall. Simply filling in the ruts with more stone is a temporary solution, with the ruts eventually returning. Long-term repair requires near rebuilding of the damaged section of the paving. You'll need to rent a skid steer from an equipment rental shop. The skid steer is a small engine loader with lift arms that can raise or lower the bucket to a needed height.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the skid steer at the start of the rut and lower the bucket to ground level so that you can cut into the crushed gravel surface. Run the loader over the rutted area, cutting the high points to either side of the rut with the bucket ledge down so that the rutted area of the driveway is level with the bottom of the ruts. This process will spread the crushed stone off the driveway in a wide area across the driveway surface and over the driveway sides.

    • 2

Rake the spread stone back into place, rebuilding the level of the driveway in the rutted section to match the level of the undamaged driveway. In rebuilding you’ll need to create a crown with the stone, building a rounded center to the driveway, sloping from the center height to lower driveway sides.

    • 3

Run a heavy roller over the reshaped crushed stone to compact the driveway surface. This will likely create a surface that’s lower than the rest of the driveway, due to loss of stone during the rut development.

Add more crushed stone to the surface and build the surface level even with the rest of the driveway with the new stone. Compact with the heavy roller again, repeating the process until the compacted driveway section is of the same height and shape as the rest of the driveway.
