Removing Oil Spots on a Brick Driveway

Oil spots take away from the beauty of a brick driveway, and degrade the surface over time. Removing the oil and grease stains left by vehicles strengthens the bricks and makes them safer to walk on in slippery weather. This do-it-yourself task can be finished in an afternoon with proper stain removers. Once complete, seal the bricks to make stains easier to clean in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush off any loose dirt, leaves and other debris with a stiff work broom. Removing the top layer of debris enables you to focus on the oil spots, and identify smaller stains you may not have noticed.

    • 2

Clean the driveway with a power washer and scrubbing brush.

    • 3

Spread sawdust, cat litter or cement powder over the oil spots and wait for the surface to dry. If they’re new, the material will absorb most of the residue. Brush it away with the brush and hose the surface.

    • 4

Pour stain remover over older spots. Use a brick degreaser or a mix of one part bleach to four parts water. Allow the mixture to settle on the bricks for about 15 minutes or the amount of specified on the instructions. Scrub the spot with the brush and warm water.

    • 5

Hose the solution down the length of the driveway to the street so it doesn’t damage surrounding growth.
