How to Remove Dirt From a Driveway

Exposed to daily use of vehicles and extreme weather, driveways naturally accumulate dirt. Whether the surface is paved with concrete, asphalt, pavers or another surface, built-up grime takes away from its appearance and affects the front yard’s overall beauty. Removing driveway dirt is not difficult. Do-it-yourselfers need only basic household items and a few hours of dedicated labor to thoroughly clean an entire driveway.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush off any loose dirt and other debris from the driveway surface with a stiff-bristled shop broom. Work from the end of the driveway closest to the house and brush the dirt down toward the street.

    • 2

Rinse off remaining dirt with a hose, pointed toward the street so puddles don’t form near the sides of the driveway.

    • 3

Mix one part household detergent with four parts warm water in a bucket and stir. Pour the solution over a small section of the driveway. Use a long-handled broom and scrubbing pad to remove embedded dirt from the driveway. Allow the soapy mixture to settle on the concrete for about twenty minutes, and move on to the next section.

    • 4

Rinse off the soapy mixture and dirt with the hose once the entire driveway is scrubbed.

    • 5

Apply a thin coat of pure, translucent sealer over the pavement with a roller brush. Adding sealer is optional, but it fills porous surfaces and makes them easier to clean.
