Landscape Design Ideas Using Pavers

When planning a paving project for your landscape, you may think of concrete, asphalt and tile as your main options. But pavers are actually one of the most convenient and attractive materials to use for landscaping applications. Made from concrete, brick and a variety of stones, pavers are small masonry blocks that are easy to install, maintain and repair. You can use them in several different ways to beautify your landscape and allow you to get the most out of them.
  1. Build a Patio

    • Pavers are an ideal building material if you want to add a patio to your backyard landscape. They work well for a large surface because they are easy to repair if damage occurs. You can simply remove the damaged pavers and replace them, so the entire patio does not need to be resurfaced. You can choose from brick, stone and concrete pavers, which all come in variety of colors, sizes and shapes. As a result, patio pavers provide a great deal of design flexibility. You can even create a subtle pattern for your patio surface, such as basket weave or herringbone.

    Install a Driveway

    • If you are interested in improving the look of your front yard’s landscape, consider using pavers to create an attractive, durable driveway. Pavers provide a more decorative look than a concrete or asphalt driveway and can add value to your home, as well. You can use concrete, brick or stone pavers to build your driveway. Concrete pavers are actually an ideal alternative to a poured concrete driveway because they provide a stronger surface and do not crack like a poured surface. Brick driveway pavers are more expensive than concrete pavers, but provide a warm, natural look. You can also opt for a sandstone driveway, though sandstone pavers are more difficult to install than concrete and brick.

    Create a Walkway

    • In addition to using pavers to landscape a large area for a patio or driveway, you can use the stones to cover smaller areas and create walkways through your back and front yards. Because of their decorative appearance, they are an ideal paving material for your front walkway. You can also use them for more casual paths through a garden or from your patio to the pool or other backyard feature. Pavers come in a variety of colors, so you can choose shades that complement the rest of the landscape. You can also find walkway pavers treated with a slip-resistant finish to ensure that your walkways are as safe as possible.

    Edge a Garden

    • If your landscape features a garden, pavers are an ideal way to create a distinct area for your plantings so they have a more formal feel. Paver edging can also prevent your children and other guests from accidentally walking over your plants and flowers. Unlike traditional paver stones, edging pavers are often set vertically so just the edge of the paver is visible. However, you can also use horizontal paver edging and place it flush with the soil around your garden. These pavers create more of a visual boundary than a physical one but add a decorative look to your landscape.
