How to Clear a Driveway With Salt

When it snows outside and temperatures plunge below freezing, ice can accumulate on a driveway. Tires spin and people can easily slip and fall. A sloped driveway is particularly hazardous in such conditions. Removing the ice is far easier when using rock salt. This is sold at most hardware stores and will melt the ice, making it easier to shovel. Rock salt, formally known as sodium chloride, is effective at melting ice even when temperatures dip well below freezing.

Instructions

    • 1

Shovel any snow left over from the storm. This allows the rock salt to reach the ice easier.

    • 2

Open the bag of rock salt and put on a pair of gloves to protect your skin from irritation. Use a 1-pound plastic container or cup to scoop out the salt.

    • 3

Sprinkle liberally over the patch of ice and allow it to work its way into the patch. Once you see the salt penetrating through the ice, begin chopping and picking up as much ice as possible with the shovel. Repeat as necessary until all the ice is removed.

Apply an additional layer of rock salt in the driveway to prevent more ice from forming. Place it on the ground beneath areas that are especially known to drip water, such as under aluminum awnings or gutters.
