How to Paint Concrete Squares

Painting the pavers is the first step before building your decorative patio or walkway. By designing a custom pattern and laying it out on graph paper, you can determine the exact number of pavers needed for each color before you begin your project. The simple 12-inch-square gray pavers become a kaleidescope of color with the addition of primer, paint and sealer.

  • Pressure washer
  • Scrub brush

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space for the patio. Transfer the measurements to the graph paper, using one square per paver.

    • 2

Color the squares, indicating the pattern of the paint colors. Count how many pavers you will need for each color.

    • 3

Place a large tarp or drop cloth on a flat surface, such as the driveway. Count and group the pavers according to the paint colors.

    • 4

Wash the pavers with a pressure washer or scrub brush and TSP. Rinse thoroughly. Allow them to dry completely before painting.

    • 5

Prime all the pavers, using a roller with a long handle to avoid stooping. Roll an even coat of primer over the pavers' tops and partway down the sides. Allow them to dry completely according to the paint manufacturer's directions.

    • 6

Roll a coat of paint over each group of pavers. Allow the paint to dry and add a second coat.

    • 7

Roll two coats of sealer over the pavers, allowing the appropriate drying time between each coat.
