How to Make Your Own Molds for Road Paving

Asphalt and concrete are often poured into molds built from wood to control the shape of the road or sidewalk being built. Local and state departments of transportation use the same basic concept of framing an area to be paved as a do-it-yourself handyman might at his home. You may need to build a paving mold for building a driveway, sidewalk or private road. All of these paving molds are built in the same fashion and the technique can be used for framing other paved areas as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Design the path for the road and mark it with chalk or marking paint.

    • 2

Dig out the area, removing the topsoil from the paved area with a shovel. Rake the area to ensure the ground is level after digging. Tap down the dirt using a large, metal tapper.

    • 3

Hammer a stake into the ground every 18 inches to 24 inches along the road with the stakes 1 inch from the edge of the road area.

    • 4

Slide 1-inch by 4-inch lengths of wood between the dug-out path and the stakes.

    • 5

Hammer gently to ensure the lumber will stay in place. Secure to the stakes with nails, if necessary. You are now ready to pour concrete or asphalt into the mold.
