How to Lay Uneven Pavers

You can use pavers to create garden paths, to edge your gardens, to build raised beds, lay a patio or edge a pond. Some pavers are very regularly shaped which makes them good for building walls because even pavers stack easily and create a level surface for the next layer to build on. Uneven pavers present more of a challenge because they don't sit flat. There are ways of dealing with such pavers and you can treat them more like field stones, which are naturally uneven.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a 6-inch-deep hole where the patio, path or edging is going to be.

    • 2

Fill the dug out area with 2 inches of sand. Level the sand using the edge of a 2-by-4-inch board and check for an even surface with the level.

    • 3

Pound stakes around the edges of the construction area and tie a string around the stakes at ground level.

    • 4

Position the uneven pavers in the pattern that you want to use for your patio, path or edging. As you place each paver, work it into the sand so that the surface is flat and level, using the strings as a guide. If a brick is a bit high on one end, tap it with a rubber mallet. Continue laying the uneven pavers until you've completed your project.

    • 5

Pour sand on top of the paved area and broom it across the pavers allowing the sand to fill in any spaces left between the uneven pavers and sweep off the excess. Wet down the surface to further position the sand between the bricks. After it dries, add sand again and sweep the excess off one last time.
