How to Pave an Edge

With a variety of material, shape and color choices available, pavers allow you considerable flexibility of design as well as ease of installation. Whether it is a patio, driveway or walkway you are creating, you must create an edge when working with pavers to prevent them from shifting over time. While many companies offer pre-manufactured edging for use with pavers, you can create an edge without purchasing prefabricated edging.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the patio, walkway or driveway pavers according to your design up to the point where you plan to create the edge.

    • 2

Dig a trench along the edge of the pavers. The trench should be deeper than the bedding sand on which you placed the pavers.

    • 3

Mix the concrete in a wheelbarrow or plastic tub. If the project is large, a wheelbarrow makes moving the concrete easier. Add the proper amount of water according to the directions on the bag and mix well with a trowel.

    • 4

Shovel the concrete into the trench to create a hidden concrete curb. The concrete should be high enough to reach the middle of the pavers but still allow room for soil to be placed on top once everything is dry. Allow the concrete to dry.

    • 5

Fill the trench in with soil once the concrete has dried. Grass will be able to grow right up to the edge of the pavers without the risk of the pavers shifting.
