Can I Put a Granite Composite Sink Undermount on a Granite Countertop?

When it comes to sinks for granite countertops, drop-in and undermount sinks are the most popular choices. A drop-in sink is fixed on top of the counter so the rim is raised up from the surface. An undermount is fixed to the counter from beneath, appearing deeper than a drop-in and showing off more of the granite. The composition of the sink itself can vary; it is the method of fixing that determines whether a sink can be undermounted on a granite countertop.
  1. The Facts

    • The size of the sink and the position of its mountings matter more than what the sink is made of when determining whether it can fit on a given countertop. An undermount sink cannot be fixed to a granite countertop in the same way as a drop-in sink because the mountings are in the wrong place. Similarly, an undermount sink cannot be fitted to a countertop when the cabinet below the counter is too small to accommodate it.

    Features

    • Undermount sinks look deep because they are fitted beneath the countertop using under-counter fastenings. Undermount sinks display the colors and textures present through the layers of the counter material and are therefore best used with a solid surface countertop such as granite, marble or limestone.

    Installation

    • For the sink to be installed, corner holes need to be drilled through which the sink can be screwed in place under the counter. Because the sink is granite composite, use a masonry drill to drill the holes, and cover the corners of the sink in masking tape to prevent accidental scratching or cracking.

    Considerations

    • Before cutting into the counter to place the sink, check the depth of the sink and compare it to the space available under the counter in the desired area. An undermount sink hangs entirely below the counter and is therefore deep compared to a drop-in sink. As a result, there may be too little space to fit the sink in the desired location.
