How to Fix Uneven Paving Stones

Patios, walkways and stepping stones may eventually become uneven, due to the gradual compaction of the ground underneath. Repeated weight on certain pavers, such as those consistently walked upon, may cause them to sink while others stay in their original positions. If your pavers were laid without a proper base, they may sink faster or deeper. Fix uneven pavers when the ground is dry, to ensure maximum compaction of the soil prior to reinserting the pavers.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a photograph of the pavers before you remove them, if each must be put back in a certain place.

    • 2

Remove the uneven pavers. Place the end of the crowbar or shovel in the joint adjacent to the first paver. Pry up the paver and set it aside. Continue until all uneven pavers have been removed.

    • 3

Excavate dirt from each paver bed, to make space for a crushed limestone base. Use a trowel to dig 4 inches down from the existing base, keeping it as level as possible.

    • 4

Compact the freshly dug ground where each paver was. Hold the hand compactor in front of you with two hands and tamp firmly.

    • 5

Fill each hole with a 4-inch layer of crushed limestone, and tamp it with the hand compactor.

    • 6

Layer 1/2 inch of sand on top of the crushed limestone in each hole, to provide an even bed for the pavers. Tamp with the hand compactor.

    • 7

Lay the pavers on their new bases, using the photograph to place them in the proper positions. Level the pavers with the level. Add or remove sand as necessary to ensure that each one is a straight, level paver that is flush with those surrounding it.

    • 8

Fill the joints with sand when all the pavers have been reinserted and leveled. Pour a small pile of sand on top of the pavers, and sweep it into the joints. Use the hand compactor to gently tamp the pavers, to help settle the sand. Continue adding sand and sweeping it into the joints until they are full. Mist the pavers and joints with water until they are soaked, to further help settle the sand.
