How to Figure Out How Many Cobblestones a Driveway Needs

Cobblestones used to pave a driveway can be a beautiful way to update the exterior of a home. Cobblestones, however, are expensive compared to other material that you can use to pave your driveway. One of the main components in planning a cobblestone driveway project is to understand how much material you need. It's easy to determine the number of cobblestones you will need.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your driveway and multiply the measurements together to get the area. For instance, if your driveway is 30 by 100 feet, the area is 3,000-square feet.

    • 2

Measure a cobblestone's length and width and multiply the measurements together to get the area of the cobblestone. For example, if your cobblestone measures 1-foot by .5 feet, then the area is .5 feet.

    • 3

Divide the area of the cobblestone into the area of the driveway to find the base number of cobblestones that you need. For instance, if the driveway is 1,000 square feet and your cobblestones are 2 square feet, then your base number of stones is 500. Determine the amount of space between each cobblestone in terms of the percentage size of a piece of cobblestone. For instance, if the cobblestone is 1 square foot and the amount of space around the each cobblestone is about 3 square inches, divide 3 inches by 12 inches, to get a percentage of 25 percent.

    • 4

Take this percentage from the number of cobblestones that you found in Step 3. For instance, if the space is about 10 percent the size and your base amount of cobblestones is 6,000, then the total number of cobblestones that you need is 5,400. To find the total number of cobblestones mathematically, find 10 percent of 6,000, which equals 600 and then minus it from the 6,000 base amount for a total of 5,400.
