How to Landscape Using a Border Design

Adding a border design to either the front or back yard breaks up the space in your yard and creates an appealing flower bed or edging for the lawn. A border design also works well on either side of a pathway. You can use a variety of materials to create a border, including stone or brick. Once it's in place, fill it with plants or flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your ideal border design by using a can of spray paint to mark out the border location. Spray along the grass or dirt to give yourself a guideline.

    • 2

Dig up and shovel away grass or dirt along your spray-painted line.

    • 3

Determine the type of stone you would like to use for your border. For a natural look, try stacking flagstone or granite cobblestone rocks for the border, or use recycled bricks for an environmentally friendly option.

    • 4

Lay out the stone along the edge of the border, adjusting as necessary. If you are going for a natural look, stack the rocks according to preference along the border edges. If you want to design a brick strip or diagonal brick edging, mix concrete according to package instructions, pour 1 inch of sand into the bottom of the trench and then half-fill the trench with concrete. Lay the bricks either flat or on the diagonal.

Plant the border with your desired foliage.
