How to Landscape With 2 Different Colors of Mulch

There are many choices regarding landscape mulch. From red to brown, from bark to chips, from basic to extravagant, mulch is used in almost every kind of landscaping scheme. Just like painting, it is common to choose one color and type for a room. You can, however, use different colors of mulch to decorate and accent details in your landscape.

Stone rakes work well for most mulches.

Choose a dark mulch for areas of landscaping near your house and in low areas such as around low decks or patios and around bushes next to the house. Transport mulch in a wheelbarrow to these areas and spread it out with a stone rake. Use a regular rake to fluff the mulch around shrubs and plants.

      Mulch on a planting bed.

In all areas away from the house where gardens are present, choose a lighter mulch or different color. For example, if you used brown by the house, use red in the planting beds. Transport mulch with a wheelbarrow into the beds and spread with a leaf rake to avoid damaging the plants.

If your landscape is terraced, use one color of mulch on one level and a different color on the next level. Alternate between the two colors.

Wood chips are often used as mulch.

If you have a center garden or landscaped centerpiece in the yard, use dark mulch along the outside edges and light mulch on the inside. The light mulch can even be light wood chip material. Some mulches are more environmentally friendly than others in their harvest and production. Check with your retailer for green mulch solutions.
