Modern Backyard Ideas

Modern design, also called minimalist, is characterized by clean lines, natural materials and open spaces. The benefit of creating a modern backyard space, as a result of the concept's minimalist approach, is it provides an abundance of usable lawn space, which allows you to designate a seating area for your guests and leave a portion for your children to use as a play area. Here are some ideas to guide and inspire.
  1. Deck

    • A deck is simple to incorporate into a modern design scheme because planks of lumber already have clean, straight lines. Build a deck that's square or rectangular, and low enough to the ground so you can step onto it without needing stairs, a wall or a handrail. This design concept aligns with the minimalist approach because the deck acts as an extension of your lawn.

    Pathway

    • Include a stone pathway, made of square pieces of slate, from a deck or patio to a sitting area. Place the stone steps into the ground so they're flush with it. The square shape and stone material fit the modern style perfectly.

    Sitting Area

    • Add a sitting area on the deck or in another location using modern outdoor furniture. For example, use a long, rectangular wooden table and either bench seats on each side or individual square seats. You can also create an informal sitting area in any space throughout the backyard by using the bench or individual seats and adding cushions.

    Water Feature

    • Integrating a water feature such as a fountain into a backyard enhances the modern design approach by bringing in another natural element. Choose a stone base in any shape for the water to spout from. A water feature also acts as the focal point in a modern backyard. Consider placing the sitting area, if you choose to not place it on the deck, around the water feature for a tranquil entertainment space.

    Foliage

    • A modern backyard doesn't need to lack in foliage to keep the space looking minimalist. A sentinel shrub adds greenery but allows you to prune and trim it into a square or rectangle so you can maintain clean lines throughout the backyard. Sentinel shrubs also provide privacy because they grow thick and lush, so plant them around the perimeter of your backyard to create a more personal space.
