Backyard Landscape Beach Ideas

Whether you live in the tropics and want to landscape your yard accordingly, or if you live faraway from the beach and simply want to make your yard look tropical, there are plenty of options for you. Combining softscaping and hardscaping features (organic and inorganic objects) will give your yard a straight-off-the beach look and feel, bound to be popular at all of your home gatherings.
  1. Softscaping

    • The plants you regularly see at the beach are those that grow in soil that is composed of mostly sand and thrive on salt water. If you don't actually live close to the beach it could be difficult to create this look, but you do have options. There are a variety of plants that will add color to your landscape, as well as the beach feel, and they grow well in many different climates. Orchids are a popular choice for a beach scape. Orchids grow well in most climates and come in beautiful, vibrant colors as do day lilies. Crotons also thrive in a variety of environments and are found in the hot, sandy beach settings, they're a sturdy, low set shrub that can line the home or set alone. Pin Oaks and palms are trees that are commonly seen along the coast line.

    Hardscaping

    • Sand is your best friend when it comes to hardscaping for a beach setting. If using plants such as the orchid and day lily, line your beds with sand. Sand also works great to fill the spaces between your pavers and stepping stones, as well as filling the cracks in patio stones and bricks. If you prefer mulch in your beds, use a light wood. Wicker furniture is a great patio addition, and Adirondack chairs are a must. Use light pastel colors (think sun faded) or bright oranges and pinks. You can also find Adirondack style side tables and ottomans in weathered, pre-distressed condition that give a nice, rugged beach look. Adirondack chairs are also great as centerpieces within your landscape.

    Décor

    • Once you have effectively combined the two landscaping elements, it's time to start decorating. Use seashells of all shapes and sizes to line your flower beds, adorn table-tops and set within tropical flower arrangements. String lights can also add a festive look when hung on porches, decks, or strung around furniture pieces. Look at outdoor appliances like clocks and weathervanes that have a beach theme to add even more tropical power to your backyard.
