Outdoor Water Feature Ideas

Adding a water feature to your outdoor landscape can add an element of tranquility. There are many different kinds of water features from which to choose. Some are labor intensive and require installing a below-ground pool and plumbing. Others are very simple and can be placed on your patio or deck. Choose aquatic plants for your water feature to make it even more attractive.
  1. Pond

    • Install a small garden pond in your landscape. You can purchase ponds at home improvement stores or garden centers. Some people may be able to install a garden pond themselves, but others may need assistance. Place rocks around the edges of the pond for an attractive touch. Incorporate flowers, such as water lilies, to add a splash of color. Aquatic plants not only look lush, they help oxygenate the water and clean it.

    Large Fountain

    • If you have the space, install a large fountain in your landscape. The fountain can be made of concrete, stone or tile. A large fountain sits above the ground and features a pool of water with a fountain in the middle. Place plants or even fish in the pool for added decoration. This type of fountain will produce pleasing babbling sounds.

    Small Fountain

    • If you want a less-expensive outdoor water feature, purchase a smaller, stand-alone fountain. This type of fountain doesn't require plumbing because it has its own water pump that circulates the same water through the fountain over and over. Simply add water and turn the fountain on and you're finished. Place attractive potted plants around the fountain.
