The Definition of a Silt Fence

A silt fence is a common site on a construction site. They are especially useful in windy or rainy areas where sediment runoff can lead to large-scale erosion.
  1. General Use

    • The silt fence stops the movement of sediment, also known as silt.

    Material

    • Silt fences are made of a geotextile that is attached to metal posts. Workers drive the posts into the ground to hold up the silt fence.

    Water Runoff

    • Water runoff flows through the geotextile of the silt fence, but the particles of sediment are too large to pass. This keeps dirt from flowing downhill and contributing to erosion.

    Alternatives

    • Some construction sites use hay or wheat straw instead of silt fences, but they are not as effective at managing sediment runoff.

    Improper Use

    • Workers should not use silt fences in concrete ditches, in streams, or anywhere where water flow is concentrated. Instead, rock dams or soil berms should be used.
