How to Landscape With Crushed Rock

Crushed rock provides a natural material for your landscaping needs. While pavement and concrete can lend a harsh look to your home's grounds, crushed rock, in its many colors and sizes, is versatile enough to complement a casual home or one that appears more elegant, according to MSN Real Estate. With a bit of forethought, you can plan and execute a landscape of crushed rock and improve your property's appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the area that you want to landscape. Cut out sections of the sod with a hoe and remove it with a flat shovel. Rake the area to level the dirt.

    • 2

Cover the cleared area with landscaping cloth. It doesn't matter if there's an excess.

    • 3

Press plastic edging through the landscaping cloth and into the ground to define the area and create a border to keep the crushed rock from spilling out of the area or washing away during rains. The top of the edging should be level with the grass surrounding the area.

    • 4

Hammer the edging stakes underneath the bottom lip of the edging to hold it securely in place.

    • 5

Cut away the extra landscaping material with a utility knife, and pour a layer of crushed rock approximately 3 inches deep all over the area.
