New York Landscaping Ideas

New York State has a number of different regions where landscaping of some kind can be done, ranging from the ultimate metropolis of New York City to the rural areas of upstate New York. These landscaping ideas are unique to the region of New York based on the plants and trees which are planted in the landscaping, as well as the location in which the landscaping is done.
  1. NYC Landscaping

    • In specific living situations within the metropolis of New York City, landscaping on rooftops, in alley ways or tiny plots between buildings can be done, adding some green space to one of the most densely populated urban environments in the world. This usually comes with clearance from the landlord and/or building owner. If landscaping is permitted there are a variety of evergreen plants that can be planted and tended to throughout the year. These plants should be able to survive the muggy New York City summers and cold New York City winters. Large beds for vegetables can even be set up and planted seasonally, so that residents in a condo or apartments can have their own organically grown food.

    Natural Stone Landscaping

    • For homes with elevated backyards in the middle of New York State try installing a number of pieces of cut stone which you can then run water through, creating a natural stream and waterfall. Beside this small natural stream, plant evergreen trees like pines and ferns which will grow almost year-round. This water can flow to a small pool or pond in which coy or lily pads can exist. However, in the winter the fish will have to be transported to a tank and the stream will have to be shut off so it doesn't freeze.

    Flower Garden Landscaping

    • An entire New York backyard landscape for a house outside of an area like Rochester in upstate New York can be dedicated to growing flowers in various beds around the yard. Build a trail out of slate between these flower beds, with larger areas that can hold areas to sit at and enjoy the surrounding colors and scents. Flowers such as geraniums, holly berries and gladiolus thrive in the spring and summer in upstate New York and have an entire beds reserved for them, creating a colorful artistic backyard array. Other flowers can be grouped together in other beds which will grow at different times of the year such as hyacinths, coleus, heuchera, tulips and rhododendron. This will allow the backyard New York flower garden to always remain colorful.
