DIY Gravel Drives for Sandy Soil in Texas

Gravel driveways are popular solutions for homeowners who have sandy soil on their driveways. Sandy driveways can cause flooding or pool with water, especially during the rainy season in Texas. Homeowners should consider gravel as a way to provide easy access to their homes without vehicles sinking into the soil. You also can create a gravel driveway design that complements the rest of the landscaping or gives you close access to the front door.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any debris from the sandy driveway. Pick up any sticks or trash. Pull weeds or spray herbicide to eliminate foliage.

    • 2

Press two stakes into the location where you want your driveway to begin from the street. Give yourself enough room for not only your car, but for a delivery truck. Drive stakes every three feet up to the garage. If you are creating a circular driveway, leave at least six feet from the driveway to the front door. Tie string from the first stake to each additional stake. Stand back and adjust the stakes according to your driveway design.

    • 3

Unroll geotextile fabric on top of the sandy driveway. Hammer landscape-fabric pegs through the fabric and into the sandy soil on each edge of the fabric to secure into the ground.

Pour gravel the size of softballs for the first layer. Spread the gravel with a rake. Place a level every few feet to ensure an even layer. Add another layer of gravel that is slightly smaller than the first layer and spread.

    • 5

Spread a third layer of gravel that is smaller than the second. Avoid pressing hard on the rake to prevent mixing up the layers. Pour the fourth and last layer of gravel on the driveway. .

Pour more gravel at the center of the driveway, so that it creates a crown. The crown allows for water to flow to the side and should be at least three inches higher than the sides.
