Shrubbery and Plants

• Shrubbery is one way to add definition to different aspects of your yard. With a lakefront property, you can add shrubbery to separate the lake from the lawn, as well as feature floral plants in between the two. Choose your favorite colored plants and make sure that they are able to grow and be planted in your local area. If you choose plants that do not adjust to your local climate, they will wilt and make your landscape look less than perfect. Place the floral plants close to the lake and erect a dirt bed to surround them. Create a border of shrubbery along the edge of the dirt bed that is furthest from the lake. Beyond this shrubbery, the lawn will feature grass leading up toward your home.

Patio

• Build a patio in your backyard that is large enough to entertain yourself and your guests. As one way of accenting the lake front's image, avoid plain concrete textures and install stone flooring as your patio's foundation. Large stones are ideal as they add a smooth texture to the area. When building the patio, make sure that you build it large enough to fit seating areas that face the lake as well as a grilling and refreshment area. This is especially pleasant when entertaining as you can barbeque and be a part of the social scene at the same time. You can also enjoy the view when standing at the grill or making drinks for you or your guests.

Walkway

• A walkway from your home and patio down to the lake is a much-needed addition. Without a walkway, your neatly-trimmed lawn will be worn down from traffic to and from the lake. Use stones or wood to build your walkway; if you have a wooden fence around your patio, add a wood border along a stone walkway so that it matches the concept of your patio design. Add lighting along the sides of the walkway so that any trip down to the lake at night is easy.
