How to Use an RF Choke Long-Term With a Dog Fence

Installing an electric dog fence is a great responsibility. First, you need to check with your veterinarian to make sure your dog is the appropriate size, weight and physical condition for the electric fence. Once the fence is installed, you will have to teach your dog where the boundaries are. After all that, you might think your job is done. But you still need to maintain the electric fence long-term to ensure your dog is always safe in the yard. Part of the maintenance process is using a radio frequency choke to check for any breaks in the wire.

  Gather the materials you will need. To use an RF choke for dog fence care, you will also need an AM radio.

  Unplug the transmitter for your dog fence from the electrical outlet for safety.

  Locate the wire leads that are connected to the transmitter. They will be connected at the bottom. Remove these wires by untwisting them from the transmitter.

  Connect the wire leads you just disconnected from the transmitter to each leg of your RF Choke.

  Find the leads for the RF Choke and connect them to the bottom of the transmitter where you just disconnected the electric fence lead wires.

  Power the transmitter up by plugging it back in and turning it on. Tune the radio. It needs to be on AM and tuned to 600 mhz. Anywhere from 600 to 1600 mhz should produce a static or throbbing noise.

  Take the radio with you as you walk the entire perimeter of your dog fence. Pay close attention to the signal you hear coming from the radio. If the signal changes, the wire beneath the ground at that spot is likely damaged in some way, such as cracked or exposed to groundwater. If the signal is interrupted, you can assume the wire beneath the ground at that point is broken. By using the RF Choke in this way, you will be able to care for your dog fence long-term.
