Land Grading & Clearing Information

Land may need to be cleared and graded for a variety of reasons such as building or planting. The land grading requirements on new construction vary between jurisdictions depending upon local code.
  1. Environmental Impact

    • The environmental impact of any land clearing project should be taken into consideration before any work is performed. Proper planning can lessen the land erosion and loss of topsoil that can result from clearing and grading a parcel of land.

    Machinery

    • A backhoe, bulldozer or tractor is necessary for any large grading and clearing project. It is not practical to try to clear brush, trees and stumps by hand. It is cheaper and more efficient to rent the machinery than to pay for manual labor to clear and grade the land.

    Grading

    • A transit is usually used to measure the grade of the land. For small grading jobs you can use a four-foot level or a string and a line level to check the grade.
