How to Know Your Acreage Without a Survey

For precise determination of acreage, you should always opt for a professional survey. The survey will not only tell you the acreage, but also offer the exact boundaries of your land. It will also provide a means to verify the acreage on tax records or acreage claimed by a landowner during the sale of a property. However, when such a survey is cost-prohibitive or when a simple estimation will suffice you can measure acreage yourself.

Visit your country tax assessor's office, consult its online tax records or peruse library archives. Look-up the property address in question and reference the acreage. The tax records will always list the acreage, since that is a deciding factor in the land's value. If you wish to verify the tax records, or in cases where your property does not exist in the databases, then you can measure it yourself.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the property using your tape measure. For larger parcels of land, you may need to pace it off by measuring your stride and counting the number of steps you take from corner to corner. For more precise measurements, you can use a GPS distance finder or application instead. This will give you the distance between your selected starting and stopping points.

Calculate the area by multiplying the length times the width. As an example, if you measured 1,000 feet by 500 feet, then your area would be 500,000 square feet.

Convert square feet to acres by dividing by 43,560. In the example, 500,000 divided by 43,560 gives you an area of 11.48 acres.
