Extreme Birdhouse Ideas

If birds visit your yard often, you'll want your feathery friends to be as comfortable as possible when they come to call. A birdhouse with an eye-catching design can make your yard more appealing for your neighbors and visitors, as well as for the birds.
  1. Castle Birdhouses

    • A birdhouse constructed like a mini castle will impress guests. It makes a decorative lawn feature, and also provides lots of space for birds. Castle birdhouses made of stone will compliment gray or brown rocks around your home, or you can build or purchase a wooden castle that matches the color of your house. Drill small holes in varying sizes on the sides of the birdhouse so the birds can climb in and out. Place birdseed like seeds, nuts and dried fruit inside the castle on the floor. Adding features like tiny bushes or a small flag with your family crest to the front of the castle will further customize the birdhouse.

    Log Cabin Birdhouses

    • If your landscape has a country or rustic design, a log cabin birdhouse will fit right in. Features that make the birdhouse look like a home, such as a chimney or tiny front door, add charm to the log cabin. You can even fashion a birdhouse that is a small replica of your actual home if you live in a log cabin. To make the log cabin appropriate for each season, add features like fake snow to the roof or base of the cabin during the holidays, and a small bordering garden to the front of the birdhouse in spring. Wood that matches your home will make the yard look more uniform. You can also attach the log cabin to a large tree in the yard.

    Stained-Glass Birhouses

    • A stained-glass birdhouse will make the front or back yard especially enchanting positioned in a colorful flower garden. You can purchase birdhouses made with glass that matches the colors of your flowers, or choose or create a stained-glass birdhouse in the shape of your family name or favorite sports team. Mount the birdhouse to the main tree in the yard to bring it more attention. Creating a space in the center of the garden and displaying the stained-glass birdhouse on a wooden pole works well for small glass houses.
