How to Measure Acreage

Acreage of Square or Rectangular Property

  Measure the length and width of your property. These measurements will allow you to determine the property's square footage.

  Multiply the length by the width. This number will be the number of square feet of your property.

  Divide the square footage of your property by 43,560. There are 43,560 square feet in an acre. The result will be the acreage of your property.

Acreage of Oddly Shaped Properties

  Separate your property into rectangles and triangles on paper to determine each section's square footage. For each rectangle, multiply the length and width for the square footage of that area. For each triangle, multiply the lengths of the sides making up a 90-degree angle, as if it were a rectangle, and then divide that number by 2.

  Add all of these numbers together. All of the numbers together will give you the total square footage of your property.

  Divide the square footage by 43,560 to determine the acreage of your property.
