Landscaping Ideas with Wood Chips

Wood chips have numerous uses in the landscape, both utilitarian and aesthetic. When selecting wood chips choose an older product which has had more time to decompose as younger mixes may contain toxins and acids which are toxic to some plants. Use wood chips much like you would use bark mulch.
  1. Create Borders

    • Use wood chips as a decorative element in your landscape to create visual boundaries and borders throughout your space. Entry walks or meandering garden paths will benefit from the definition of wood chip borders. For a uniform look measure the borders and mark them before laying the chips; for a more organic aesthetic simply pour the chips in approximately the same width along each side of the walk.

    Cover Flower Beds

    • One of the more traditional uses for wood chips in the landscape is as a cover for flower and plant beds. Wood chips have numerous benefits for your garden: they help to insulate the plants against cold; they improve the nutrient content of the soil; they prevent weeds and they retain moisture. In addition, depending on the variety you choose wood chips can add splashes of rich wood color throughout your space. Spread chips over planting beds to create a uniform look throughout the landscape.

    Create Outdoor Floors

    • Wood chips provide a soft surface for children's play areas. Use a layer of wood chips underneath a swing set or jungle gym to create a safe and tidy ground cover. Other flooring uses include patios or outdoor sitting areas where you wish to inhibit the growth of weeds or other plants to create an open area. When applying wood chips as outdoor flooring, you may want to line the area with a natural outdoor liner to help eliminate weeds and to keep the area level.
