How to Landscape for Brick Houses

With uniform lines, brick houses tend to feature traditional, conservative architecture. The choices you make when landscaping a brick home should be influenced by the colors, textures and style of the house. The natural earth tones of red brick complement rich green foliage and large white or pale blossoms. There are a number of landscape design elements you can use to accentuate the rustic charm of brick.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a landscape design plan that includes your budget, time frame and available resources. Create a scale diagram of your lot, including the house and any existing trees, walkways and driveways. Make a prioritized list of the elements you would like to add to the yard, and mark them on the diagram.

    • 2

Observe the growing conditions in different areas of your yard. Note the amount of sun the back and front yard receive, spots with drainage issues and the type of soil you have. Use a soil testing kit to find out the pH level and nutrient contents.

    • 3

Install the hardscapes you want to add. A black asphalt driveway is durable and functional, and won't detract attention from the house or yard. Consider spreading pea gravel or laying flagstones for walkways that provide a natural transition to the house.

    • 4

Plant ivy or flowering vines along fencing to increase privacy and add a lush backdrop to your front yard.

    • 5

Add low-growing perennials along walkways to add a splash of color to the lawn. For instance, an alternating pattern of hostas and impatiens gives walkways a polished look.

    • 6

Build circular borders around trees to add curves to the landscape. Curves break up the straight lines of a brick home. Remove grass around trees and spread a 4-inch layer of gravel around the base.

    • 7

Plant hedges or trees along the property line to increase privacy and add depth to the landscape. Space trees according to the size they will be when mature, and make sure they won't interfere with power lines or underground wires. As hedges develop, you can trim them to reflect the style of your landscape.

Install lighting for functionality and to add a soft, welcoming touch at night. Mount lanterns on either side of your front door, and consider adding a lamp post or footlights along pathways.
