How to Put a Stop Sign on a Private Property

You may place stop signs on private property if the property is yours or you have the owner's permission. The sign may reduce speeding on the private property or prevent unwanted collisions, but it is not a litmus tests for accident reviews for insurance cases or accident liability. Place the sign however you wish; however, there are some recommendations for how to draw attention to the sign.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Post hole digger

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with any homeowners' associations or covenants for your community regarding laws for signage on private property. Check the local municipal zoning laws for rules on private property signage. Zoning laws are found through the local city hall.

    • 2

Get the permission or approval to place the stop sign on the private property in writing. If the sign is to be placed on property other than yours, get the written approval of the land owner. You do not need permission if you are the land owner.

    • 3

Dig out a hole post for the stop sign. A recommended distance from a road to the sign is two feet from the edge of the road. The sign post hole depth should be at least two feet.

    • 4

Pour the dry cement into the wheel-barrow and add water as directed by the cement bag instructions. Different mixes have different ratios. Stir the cement until viscous.

    • 5

Pour the wet cement into the hole. Place thesign post into the hole and let the cement set with the post in it. Hold it in position for the first few minutes to let the cement begin to set, keeping the signpost upward.

    • 6

Hang the stop sign on the pole so the center of the sign is seven feet above the ground. This is the recommended height as per the Federal Highway Association for stop signs. Drill the sign to the post and use the wrench to attach lock nuts to the back of the bolts.
