How to Soundproof a Building Lot

Soundproofing can be a challenging task because sound waves will travel through almost any object. Removing the sound completely is almost impossible without going to drastic lengths. It is always easier to address the sound at the source. Only three things can reduce sound: space, mass and dampening. In an exterior environment you have space on your side. The other two factors are more challenging because of the large volume of space. Applying a mass or dampening a large area will require some creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the sound at the source if at all possible.

    • 2

Plant large evergreen trees along your property line. Trees cannot block the sound completely, but will definitely reduce it.

    • 3

Erect a solid concrete or concrete block wall along the perimeter of your property. Introducing mass is a very effective way of reducing sound. The heavier the wall, the more sound it will eliminate.

Install an absorptive noise barrier. There are a number of companies that produce high-tech, expensive noise reduction systems made from composite materials.
