Where Is the Transmission Drain on a John Deere Gator TX?

The John Deere Gator TX Turf utility cart is a rear-engine rider designed for maintenance and landscaping tasks in large areas such as golf courses. It features a four-cycle gas engine that is located underneath the cargo box and is equipped with a transaxle.
  1. What is a Transaxle?

    • A transaxle is a single unit combining transmission gearbox, clutch, final drive and differential. This single unit is connected directly to the driveshaft and mostly used in rear-engine vehicles.

    Transmission Specs

    • The Gator TX has a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a speed of 15 mph and sealed bearing throughout. A fully enclosed oil bath is located within the transaxle.

    Changing Transaxle Oil

    • The transaxle drain plug is located in a slot on the underside of the machine. Remove the plug to drain fluid. Check the O-ring for damage and replace if needed and reinsert plug. Lift the cargo box and remove the dipstick located on top of the transaxle housing. Insert a funnel into the dipstick location and add 4.8 quarts of transaxle oil. Wait a couple of minutes and check oil level. Add more if necessary. Install and tighten dipstick.

    Type of Oil

    • The John Deere Service Manual recommends HY-GARD (JDM J20C) for use in the transaxle units of their utility vehicles. A low viscosity version of this oil may be used for temperatures below 0-degrees Fahrenheit.
