How to Change the Bulb in Low-Voltage Spotlight Outdoor Lighting

Creating a low-voltage lighting plan specifically for your home and garden requires certain types of fixtures placed in strategic positions to illuminate features outside your home. Choose floodlights to light your trees, large garden decorations and wall-wash your structure. Use spotlights to mimic moonlight and focus your eyes on small elements. When a low-voltage spotlight bulb burns out, you must quickly change the bulb to keep your garden lighting as originally planned.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the spotlight fixture cools if you are attempting to change the bulb immediately. Even though the fixture is low-voltage, it can still become hot.

    • 2

Twist the lens cover from the spotlight counterclockwise to remove it. Use your fingers to grab the burned-out bulb and pull it out of the low-voltage socket.

    • 3

Wrap the replacement 12-volt MR 16 low-voltage replacement bulb in tissue. The oils from your fingers could damage the replacement spotlight bulb and cause it to burn out prematurely. Push the two pins of the MR 16 bulb into the low-voltage socket.

    • 4

Twist the lens cover back onto the spotlight fixture clockwise.
