How Is Flagstone Sold?

Flagstone imparts an earthly beauty to any property and is offered in an array of colors with the versatility to complement nearly any design. Available in several different cuts -- sawn, chop, irregular and boulders -- its end uses are numerous. Flagstone is generally sold in three different forms.
  1. Individually

    • Select individual flagstone pieces for highly visible areas.

Many retail stone yards offer customers the opportunity to select individual flagstones for a project. They are often sold from stone piles and by the pound. Ask the yard before climbing over a pile of boulders to make your choice. Flagstone is heavy, and retailers have associates to assist in selection.

    Pallet

    • Quarries drop ship to customers.

The quarries that mill flagstone generally sell to wholesalers by the pallet. Pallets are sold by the tone and, depending upon the rock, ship at 3,000 to 4,000 lbs. The cost will vary according to the particular flagstone and destination, and typically includes a delivery charge.

    Specialty Projects

    • Specialty designs use the best flagstone.

Some stone suppliers provide their best flagstone for a specific purpose. The stone is cut and arranged using premium materials with an end design in mind. Flagstone sold for a specific project -- fireplaces and hearths, for example -- are sold by the ton using some of the most attractive pieces from the quarry.
