How to Size for Solar Kiln Fans

Lumber found around your home or business typically is dried until it retains a certain amount of moisture before you use it. While some prefer to air dry their lumber, solar kilns are also a viable option. Once constructed, it uses the power of sunlight to get your lumber dried to your specifications. It's vital to ensure you size the kiln fan correctly, so that once it's installed, it circulates air and lets the kiln do its job.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the entire length and width of the kiln fan with a tape measure. Write down these numbers on a piece of paper with a pencil.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the surface to which you are attaching the fan with the tape measure. Write down both numbers on your piece of paper with the pencil.

    • 3

Compare the measurement you made for the fan to the length and width of the surface to see if the fan can comfortably fit. For example, if you measured the fan as 38 inches long and 25 inches wide, and the surface is 40 inches long and 28 inches wide, then the fan will fit right onto the surface.
