DIY Installing a Mailbox

Mailboxes come in many different shapes and sizes, and you can even make your own. If you have a mailbox that you need to mount, you must install a mailbox pole in the ground to which you can attach the mailbox first. You can install a mailbox yourself with just a few hours' time and some basic equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an appropriate spot to mount the mailbox. Dig a hole in the ground about 12 inches deep using the post-hole digger. Measure the depth of the hole frequently as you dig using the tape measure.

    • 2

Hammer wood stakes into the ground on three sides of the hole using the mallet. Cut the string into three long pieces with a pair of scissors. Attach one piece of the thick string to each wood stake. Insert the mailbox pole in the hole and have a friend hold the pole with the level on the side. Tie the strings to the pole so that the strings keep the pole plumb and don't allow the pole to move while the concrete is drying.

Pour the concrete mix in the wheelbarrow and add the amount of water recommended on the bag of concrete. Mix the concrete and the water using the trowel. Pour the concrete into the hole using either the wheelbarrow or the trowel, then adjust the pole with your hands and use the level to verify the pole is still plumb. Allow the concrete to dry.

Open the mailbox door. Insert the mounting hardware for the mailbox through the holes in the mailbox and into the pole using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench.
