How to Plan a Deck Layout

A deck is an elevated outdoor space where you can enjoy your yard while still having access to your home. Although many decks are made of wood, some are constructed with recycled products that are resistant to fading, decay and rot. Decks can serve multiple purposes. You may simply want to relax on your deck, or perhaps you want to use it to host parties, and a bar area and outdoor kitchen are in order. However you want to use your deck, planning it is relatively easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the back and sides of the house, and transfer these measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper. Note the location of doors. Also note the location and size of any buildings, pathways, pool, fountain, walls, fences, trees or garden beds.

    • 2

Call your utility company to make sure your deck will not interfere with any underground utilities, and check out any restrictions at the building department in your community. You may also need a building permit. If your lot is steeply sloped, ensuring that the deck is properly supported may boost your construction cost. Make sure your plan covers any restrictions and special considerations.

    • 3

Make a list of the features you want your deck to have. Such a list may include: outdoor kitchen, fire pit, fountain, planters, benches, dining area, lounge area, trellis or shaded room. You will also need stairs from the deck to your backyard.

Tape the graph paper to a flat surface. Tape tracing paper over the graph paper. Draw a deck sized to fit the functions you want.

    • 5

Draw several deck designs, using individual sheets of tracing paper. Connect the deck to the yard in such a way that the deck enhances gardens, pools, fountains, pathways, lighting, outbuildings and other structures. The railing design should favor the style of the home.

    • 6

Make the deck accessible through at least one exterior door. That door should be from a public space in the home like a family room, breakfast area or dining room. If the deck can also accommodate a master bedroom door, so much the better.

Size the deck to fit the functions with enough room to walk around furniture. Shape the deck to work with the shapes that are in the landscape. If your garden has lots of curves, consider using curves in your deck, too. A deck that is too large can overwhelm a backyard. A deck that is too small can restrict your uses and, therefore, your enjoyment.
