How to Choose Shutters for Colored Siding

Shutters can make a big difference in the outside appearance of your home. If your home is a neutral color, such as light tan, gray or white, choosing the shutters might not be very hard. But if your siding color is bold, such as green, blue or red, then choosing a shutter color could be more challenging.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose shutters in a complementary -- also known as contrasting -- color. These colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. For example, consider rust shutters against an exterior with forest-green siding. A subtle orangish gold can give dark blue siding the pop it needs. Black shutters, meanwhile, always look stylish against a traditional home with white siding.

Pick a color for your shutters that is the same as your window trim to make the windows look bigger. Or consider going with three exterior colors: a main color for the siding, a second color for the shutters and a third for the trim. A variation of the complementary color scheme can work well. For shutters and trim, pick the colors beside your primary color's complement. For example, if you have a Mediterranean home with terra cotta siding, pick deep blue for the shutters and deep green for the trim.

Get samples of the colors you're considering for your shutters. Bring these samples home with you, and hold them up to your siding. Do so at various times of day to make sure the colors work well together. These shutters will be on your home for some time, so make sure you're pleased with the color.

Pay attention to the hinges if they will be visible. The hinges need to match other elements of your home, including the colored siding and the other outdoor hardware.
