How to Convert 6-Volt Negative Ground to 12-Volt

Converting a 6-volt negative ground to a 12-volt does not always require you to replace the wire. The ground wire used for most 6-volt systems is sufficient to carry a 12-volt current. However, after making the conversion from a 6-volt system to a 12-volt system, you may want to replace the negative ground wire, especially if it is weathered or worn. By doing so, you ensure that your new 12-volt system will not have problem as a result of a faulty ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the ignition key to the "off," position and remove it from the ignition switch. By doing so you cut the electrical circuit, and this will allow you to handle the negative battery cable without getting a shock.

    • 2

Unthread the nut or bolt attaching the 6-volt negative battery to the battery. Follow the negative cable to the ground wire housing located on the frame of the tractor or the block of the engine. Unthread the bolt attaching the ground wire -- negative battery cable -- to the ground housing.

Bolt the 12-volt battery cable to the ground housing. Attach the other end of the cable to the negative battery terminal.
