How to Convert a 6 Volt to a 12 Volt Regulator

By converting your 6 volt regulator to a 12 volt regulator, you can help improve your electrical system's output. One shortcoming of 6 volt regulators is that they are notorious for having a difficult time turning an engine when temperatures are cold or freezing. Another shortcoming of 6 volt systems is that their regulators cannot charge a battery at low rpm or idle engine speeds. Finally, 6 volt regulators are antique items; replacement parts for them are more difficult to find than parts for 12 volt systems.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Wrench set

Remove the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal. This cable should be black and run to the frame of the engine bay. Remove the positive battery cable from the positive terminal. This cable should be red and connect to the generator. Unthread the nut attaching the positive battery cable to the generator. This cable is the only one running between the battery and the generator. Unthread the nuts connecting the wire running between the generator to the regulator. Detach the wire running between the regulator and the coil by unthreading the nuts.

Unbolt the regulator and the generator from their respective mounts with a wrench and a socket set. Turn on the grinder. Place the corner of the grinder's wheel on the weld that attaches the generator mount to the frame of the tractor. Grind off the weld. Grind the 6 volt regulator mount off the frame of the tractor as well. Weld the 12 volt alternator with the regulator mount onto the tractor in the same place where the 6 volt generator sat.

Bolt the alternator and regulator onto the 12 volt mount. Take the positive wire running from the coil to the terminal and attach it to the alternator with a nut. Attach the positive battery cable to the alternator. Reattach the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and then attach the positive battery cable running off of the alternator to the positive battery cable.
