Different Sizes of Paving Stones

Patio Pavers

• Patio pavers come in a variety of sizes, including 4 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches, 4 7/8 by 8 15/16 inches, 5 1/2 by 9 inches and 6 by 6 inches, according to Better Homes and Gardens. Other typical sizes, according to Better Homes and Gardens DIY Advice, include 2 by 4 inches, 4 by 6 inches and larger sizes up to 24 inches. Patio paving stones range between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches in thickness. They come in a variety of shapes, such as rectangular, wavy and square.

Curbing Pavers

• Curbing pavers are often used for driveways, parking lots and roads. These landscaping pavers must withstand the pressures of heavy vehicles. They measure between 4 and 8 inches thick and 3 inches and up in width.

Pool Pavers

• Paving stones used around a swimming pool must cover larger areas than a walkway or other area in your landscape. That's why paving stones used for this purpose can be 16 inches or more in length and either square or rectangular in shape. Commercial pools use large-sized pavers in the 16- and 20-inch range. Smaller stones used to line pools and create designs, such as flagstones, come in sizes similar to patio pavers.

Stair Pavers

• Paving stones used for exterior residential and commercial stairs are typically larger in size, between 12 and 24 inches in length. Indoor stairs can be covered with stair treads that match the stone used elsewhere in the immediate area of the home or business, or you can have a stone staircase custom made based on your particular dimensions.

Walkway Pavers

• Walkway stone pavers, such as cobblestones and Belgium blocks, are typically smaller in size, often measuring 2 by 4 inches and arranged in groups of four or placed in both horizontal and vertical directions in the walk. Other walkway pavers are irregular in shape and size, creating an intentionally jagged or natural look. Larger stones, 12 inches and larger, are also used in outdoor residential and commercial walkways.
