How to Plant Bushes in a Small Area

Bushes are a vital element of any garden. They provide excellent coverage in the garden and interest all year round. They unify the space, providing a visual transition from large structures like the house and trees to low-level lawns, plants and flowers. If you only have a small area for a garden, then bushes should still be a part of the overall structure.

Instructions

Consider where you want to place the bushes first. Make sure you pay close attention to how large the bush will grow. Don't plant any bush too near a walkway or a window to the house; when it grows to full size it may cause an obstruction.

Choose small bushes to plant rather than large, unruly specimens. Always read the label on the bush to find out its size when fully mature. Use this measurement to judge where the best place to plant the bush is.

    • 3

Fork over the area where you would like to plant the bush. Mix in some organic matter and some fertilizer to ensure the ground is well prepared. Dig a hole about a spade deep and plant the bush. Using your hands loosely pack the soil around the roots of the bush.

Add some mulch to the area around the bush and water thoroughly. Watering will need to be done regularly until the bush is established.

    • 5

Plant bedding plants and other annuals in between the bushes so that a splash of instant color is provided. While the bushes are growing, you can liven up the garden with beautiful flowers and plants situated in between.
