How to Landscape a Circular Driveway

A feature sometimes seen on large homes or homes with large front yards is a circular driveway. There are practical benefits to installing a circular driveway, including more parking space and the ability to enter and exit the driveway without having to do so in reverse. It can be visually appealing as well, with the circular driveway providing symmetry to the front yard. You can maximize the appearance of your circular driveway by landscaping the area around it.

Instructions

    • 1

Install flower beds in the area between the driveway and the house. Plant a mix of annuals and perennials to provide variety in the flower beds.

    • 2

Install a walkway between the top of the driveway and the curb if the driveway is a semicircle. Rather than use concrete, use materials that can provide a decorative element, such as brick or stone. Plant flower beds in the areas between the walkway and the driveway to replace the grass, or plant shrubs alongside the walkway to form an enclosed path leading up to the house.

    • 3

Install a fountain if the driveway is completely circular, with an island in the center of it. This adds an active feature to the yard and acts as a focal point.

    • 4

Install plants in the island instead of a fountain. Depending on the size of the space, you can plant a tree in the center, with shrubs around the base of the tree. If the space is too small for a tree, plant a tall shrub in the center and flowers around the base. Tier the plants so that the smallest plants ring the edge of the island and the largest plants are in towards the center.

    • 5

Install a flagpole in the center of the island, or at the peak of the semicircle, and plant bushes and flowers around it, again planning the layout in tiers so the smallest plants are on the outside and your eyes climb the tiers to the flagpole.

Install landscape lighting. There are different ways to use lighting, including installing track lighting along the driveway or walkway for a runway effect, or using floodlights to highlight the flagpole, tree, fountain or front of the house.
