How to Landscape a Front Courtyard

A courtyard is a perfect location to entertain guests on a warm evening or retreat to for peace and relaxation. Whether you want the courtyard to blend in with the rest of the landscaping or stand out, there are plenty of materials to choose from to create your ideal courtyard. Once you have the basic materials of the courtyard selected, use accessories and plants to complete the look.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the courtyard floor with a natural material that enhances the look of the home. Materials to choose from include gravel, brick, paving stone or tile. Between stones or along pathways add durable ground cover such as thyme or mint to soften up the look of the courtyard.

    • 2

Place potted shrubs or flowers along the perimeter of the courtyard or add plants into existing flower beds. Add color to the space by placing planters with colorful flowers along courtyard walls or use a simple hedge or trellis to increase greenery and privacy within the space.

    • 3

Select one feature to use in the courtyard, such as a sculpture or water fountain, to keep it a focal point in the courtyard. A water fountain set in the center of the courtyard evokes relaxation, especially when surrounded by flowers such as impatiens, begonia, pansy or lobelia.

    • 4

Hang string lights or outdoor paper lanterns overhead to provide subtle lighting to the courtyard. Line walls with ornamental fountain grass and set small spot lights behind each plant to uplight and show off the silhouette of the wispy plant. Showcase courtyard sculptures or fountains with small spotlights.

    • 5

Set up an entertaining area within the courtyard. Use outdoor furniture to set up a seating or dining area for guests to enjoy. Furniture examples include comfortable love seat, reclining chairs or chaise lounge chairs. Add fragrant plants such as lavender, gardenia, peony or sweet pea in pots around entertaining areas or add jasmine to a trellis close to the front door or against an unsightly fence to offer color and fragrance to the courtyard.
