Belgian Block Ideas

Belgian blocks are better for use in outdoor landscapes than bricks because bricks are made of dried mud and limited in shape and size. Belgium blocks are formed using rock materials that contain hard minerals. They're pre-cut or you can cut them yourself. They are available in rounded, cubed, rectangular and square shapes and they are available in many sizes, including 4 by 4 by 4 inches and 10 by 5 by 5 inches.
  1. Patios

    • Belgian block pavers made of granite are a good option for patios because they can withstand the elements in the outdoor landscape better than pavers made of softer stones. They also come in colors not normally seen for patio flooring, such as blue pearl, a dark black color interspersed with flecks of shiny gray and blue coloring that lighten the overall look. You will have many colors to choose from, and the look will definitely be unique. If your patio has a direct entrance to your home, use the same Belgian blocks in your home as you did for your patio for a seamless look, as granite makes an excellent indoor flooring product too. Other Belgian block materials for patio use include bluestone and sandstone.

    Walls

    • Belgian block paving units provide the homeowner with a colorful array of sturdy retaining-wall options. They also offer several different finishes. Pick a shiny and polished finish for an interior wall made of Belgian blocks. Granite's Kashmir gold is light enough not to overshadow a room and distinctive enough in shading and brilliance to catch the attention of guests as they pass by. Other Belgian block finish options include brushed, honed, leather, rough and velvet looks. You can use bluestone or sandstone Belgium blocks for your retaining wall, too, as well as concrete. But if you don't want to have to replace the wall very often -- if ever -- granite is a good stone choice.

    Tables and Benches

    • Make a statement by using Belgian blocks to create a table for exterior use. Granite and sandstone provide both strength and beauty for your outdoor dining experience. The elements won't be a problem, as they both hold up well against them. Create a long-lasting bench for your garden by placing a slab of natural stone the color of your Belgian blocks on top of the block structure and you will have an elegant seat for your outdoor piece of furniture.

    Outdoor Walkway

    • Use Belgian blocks, otherwise known as cobblestones, to make an outdoor path leading from your driveway to your front door. This type of stone has a history for not needing replacement for centuries after being laid. You can use any of the Belgium block stones on the market (bluestone, sandstone and granite, for example), but if laying a walkway that will not have to be replaced years later is important, opt for granite, a harder mineral stone.
